HLTH 1530 - Community Health Worker I


4.5 Credits

This course introduces students to the role of community health workers and their importance in the healthcare system.  Students will demonstrate knowledge of the basic concepts of common diseases found in global populations and demonstrate how ethics influences client care.  Students will serve as liaisons between providers, clients, and agencies by developing and using critical thinking as a framework for solving problems and making decisions to serve community members best.  Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to collect and analyze appropriate client and community information used in making data driven decisions.

Course Objectives
  1. Students will be able to explain the role of the Community Health Worker as part of the overall healthcare team.
  2. Students will be able to build upon the evolution of the Community Health Worker in the United States to develop a strategic plan for the future.
  3. Students will learn about cultural humility and analyze the importance of becoming lifelong learners and practitioners of cultural humility.
  4. Students will be able to conduct a client-centered interview and create a confidentiality policy for conducting client interviews.
  5. Students will be able to design a personal professional development plan to enhance their client-centered counseling knowledge and skills.
