HVAC 1102 - HVAC/R Shop Practices


4.5 Credits

Students practice using tools in basic HVAC/R jobs such as tube bending, flaring, swaging, soldering, and brazing. Students learn to cut and thread gas pipe and how to fabricate drain lines in schedule 40. Students learn and gain certification in tracpipe. Students become acquainted with standard shop tools and equipment in order to meet or exceed industry standards.

Course Objectives
  1. Discuss safety, prepare written safety rules.  Demonstrate knowledge of safe operations.
  2. Identify hand tools used in the trade.
  3. Demonstrate the proper and safe operating procedural use of hand tools.
  4. Demonstrate the ability to follow blueprints, construct projects.
  5. Analyze and discuss problems incurred during the development of assigned projects.
  6. Pass test on soldering, brazing, swedging, flaring and questions.  Student solder joints will be broken apart and inspected; brazing joints will be pressure tested and inspected.  Students must be able to meet or exceed industry standards.
  7. Demonstrate the ability to cut and thread gas piping.
  8. Pass a Tracpipe certification test.
  9. Demonstrate the ability to make drain lines out of PVC.
