WELD 2810 - Welder Pre-Qualification 3.0 Credits
Students wanting to be certified welders must pass a welder performance qualification test. This course is preparation for such a test. Students identify the appropriate code and welding procedure, become familiar with the requirements of the test, prepare the test coupons, and work on skill-building in preparation for the test. Testing is not done as part of this course.

Course Objectives 1. To be able to explain what it means to be a “Certified Welder” and the process leading to welder certification.
2. To identify what certifications are appropriate according to the students’ career goals.
3. To identify what performance qualification tests are necessary to obtain those certifications.
4. To identify an appropriate welding procedure specification for the test.
5. To assess the students’ ability to produce welds according to that procedure.
6. To determine what materials are needed for the qualification tests.
7. To be able to prepare the testing materials for qualification according to the specifications of the code or procedure.
8. To produce acceptable practice performance qualification tests.
9. To conduct destructive testing and evaluate the results.
10. To demonstrate the ability to pass a welder performance qualification test.
