WELD 1200 - Gas Metal Arc Welding (MIG) - Steel I


3.0 Credits

This course uses the theory and techniques in basic gas metal arc welding to produce sound fillet welds and sound groove welds in both the flat and vertical positions. Students weld using short-circuit and spray modes of metal transfer.

Pre/Corequisite: (1) WELD 1100 must be taken prior to or at the same time as this course.

Course Objectives
1. To be able to use and understand the standard and non-standard welding terms and definitions commonly used by welding professionals.
2. To be able to use Gas Metal Arc Welding processes (GMAW-S & GMAW) to produce quality welds based on an understanding of their method of operation, equipment and application to the welding of steel using .045 diameter wire or as prescribed by industry.
3. To be able to perform Gas Metal Arc Welding applications safely, with knowledge of related hazards and precautions.
4. To be able to properly and safely set up Gas Metal Arc Welding equipment and also properly and safely prepare for welding.
5. To be able to produce quality single-pass fillet welds in the flat and vertical positions
6. To be able to produce quality multi-pass fillet welds in the flat and vertical positions.
7. To be able to produce quality single-pass groove welds in the flat and vertical positions.
8. To be able to produce quality multi-pass groove welds in the flat and vertical positions.
9. To be able to pass Welder Performance Qualification Tests in the flat and vertical positions.
