HVAC 1201 - Heating Fundamentals, Install & Service 4.5 Credits
Students study heating fundamentals and operations of gas and electric heating systems. Installation and service problems are investigated along with wiring, operating and safety controls, use of test instruments, venting, combustion air, gas piping and trouble-shooting. Efficiency tests are conducted in the lab with emphasis on safety.
Prerequisites: (1) HVAC 1101 with a grade of C or better

Course Objectives 1. Review and explain definitions that are used in conjunction with gas and electric appliances.
2. Discuss and solve installation problems related to gas and electric appliances.
3. Interpret tables to size gas and flue pipe.
4. Review orifices and select to size for LP installation.
5. Apply the classroom material to the lab work of cutting and sizing gas pipe, venting, wiring, running, and testing gas furnaces.
6. Identify and explain components used on gas and electric furnaces.
7. Demonstrate the ability to interrupt schematics and physical wiring diagrams.
8. Discuss heating fundamentals, complete combustion, T.D. and heat transfer.
9. Review ignition systems.
10. Demonstrate the ability to wire, run and perform tests on gas and furnaces.
11. Identify the components of basic electricity as related to electric heat.
12. Demonstrate the ability to wire and troubleshoot circuits.
13. Differentiate single-stage and two-stage thermostats.
14. Demonstrate the ability to install and troubleshoot thermostats.
15. Identify the basic types of furnaces.
16. Demonstrate the ability to select a furnace based upon job criteria.
17. Evaluate furnace operations and demonstrate maintenance of furnace components.
