HMSV 2450 - Crisis Intervention

Students explore theories about crisis intervention and how to apply that theory in the field. The course systematically improves the students’ interview, communication, evaluation and helping skills within the framework of crisis intervention and management.

Course Objectives
  1. Distinguish and describe crises from other kinds of human problems.
  2. Recognize and explain characteristics of clients in various crisis situations, and outline helping strategies appropriate to each situation.
  3. Assess clients for post-traumatic stress disorder.
  4. Distinguish and explain helping from rescuing, and evaluate helping approaches in light of the nature of the client’s crisis.
  5. Identify and explain each step of the problem-solving process and demonstrate this process in providing crisis assistance.
  6. Develop a process for identifying community resources that appropriately respond to crisis clients’ needs.
  7. Accurately record client information and progress in problem solution.
  8. Review and demonstrate appropriate helping skills in response to requests for assistance.
  9. Develop a personal plan of care for a crisis worker that could help to prevent or reduce “burn-out.”
