HMSV 2150 - Multicultural Counseling 4.5 Credits
Students learn about the counseling implications for cultural, social and economic factors as they affect diverse groups including African Americans, Native Americans, Hispanics, and others. Attention is paid to multicultural barriers and to the impact of the counselor’s own worldview on the counseling relationship. Adaptation of counseling techniques and theories to the needs of minority clients will be examined.

Course Objectives
- Identify, evaluate and describe the impact of the student’s world view upon the counseling interaction with the culturally different client.
- Examine and explain historical and cultural differences of various groups including (at minimum) African Americans, Native Americans and Hispanics. Discuss appropriate adaptations of counselor approaches to increase effectiveness in working with diverse populations.
- Experience an interview with a person of a different cultural background.
- Identify and state barriers to effective multicultural counseling.
- Assess and adapt traditional counseling models for their impact upon culturally different clients.
