EMSP 1120 - Paramedic Part 1 of 4


12.0 Credits

The Paramedic Part 1 of 4 course is the first in a sequence of four courses that provides an introduction to Emergency Medical Care. 

It expands the knowledge of EMS systems, roles, responsibility, wellness, medical-legal and ethical issues are woven throughout parts 1 through 4 of this program. Part 1 builds knowledge of therapeutic communication, patient assessment, communication and documentation, and understanding of respiratory emergencies.  

The general principles of anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, medical terminology, pharmacology, and IV access, and medical administration form the foundation of the four-part sequence. 

The focus of part 1 of 4 is the respiratory system, acid base balance, airway management, ventilation, and respiratory emergencies. 

 

NOTE: All paramedic courses must be taken consecutively, completed with an C or above, and taken concurrently with their respective corequisite clinical/field component in order to sit for the Paramedic certification exam.

Course Objectives
  1. Apply advanced knowledge and demonstrate how a paramedic manages the various EMS systems, roles, responsibilities.
  2. Apply advanced knowledge and demonstrate how a paramedic manages medical-legal and ethical issues.
  3. Self-evaluate, consider, and carry out the wellness needs of the EMS team.
  4. Perform a ALS comprehensive history and physical exam on any patient and communicate and document the findings.
  5. Establish and/or maintain a patent airway, oxygenate, and ventilate a patient.
  6. Integrate pathophysiological principles and assessment findings to formulate a field impression and implement the treatment plan for the medical patient with respiratory problems.
  7. Apply acid-base balance advanced knowledge to medical and trauma patients.
  8. Apply the skills of proper IV access and medication administration.
  9. Develop a base knowledge for ALS pharmaceuticals and their usage.
  10. Practice and apply skills from the EMSP Handbook for EMSP 1120.
