DESL 2240 - Emissions and Maintenance


4.0 Credits

Students study today’s newest emission control systems and engine maintenance. Focus is on how to tune-up and maintain the latest diesel engine after-treatment systems.

Prerequisites: (1) DESL 2220  with a grade of C or better

Course Objectives
  1. Work safely in the shop/lab without harm to oneself or other students.
  2. Gain the skill of tool usage through the hands on use of the student’s tools and equipment/tools supplied by the college.
  3. Perform valve adjustments on heavy duty diesel engines.
  4. Identify maintenance intervals for recommended valve adjustments.
  5. Properly diagnose component failures.
  6. Explain the function and theory of compression brakes, egr, scr, and def systems.
  7. Gain technical skill by disassembling systems and reassembling emissions related parts and systems.
  8. Properly diagnose component failures by performing 3 and 7 above.
  9. Understand and use diagnostic equipment to perform emission related regenerations and dosing routines.
  10. Diagnose electrical and electronic failures or fault codes in emission related OBD components.
