ARCH 1005 - AEC Industry 6.0 Credits
Students learn aspects of the AEC (Architecture, Engineering, and Construction) industry including the roles of professionals involved in the building design and construction process. The tools and phases of design, construction documents, contracts, as well as codes and regulations are explored. Students gain an understanding of the dynamic nature of contemporary building design. Students participate in on-site visits to AEC industry companies and construction sites.

Course Objectives
- Analyze the roles and responsibilities of professionals in the AEC industry, including the training required to obtain these roles.
- Differentiate the phases of the design process and compare them to the construction process.
- Evaluate the lifecycle of a building as it is designed, constructed, and occupied.
- Appraise the tools and products of the architect, engineer, and construction manager including relevant software applications.
- Analyze how constraints, requirements, client expectations, and designers’ expertise contribute to the design and functionality of buildings.
- Discern which codes, regulations, and standards are applicable to different building construction types and occupancies.
- Interpret how codes, regulations, and standards ensure life safety, energy efficiency, and accessibility as well as promote resiliency and environmental responsibility.
- Observe real-world AEC industry environments including professional offices and construction sites.
