ARTS 2150 - Intermediate Ceramics 4.5 Credits
Students focus on the potter’s wheel as a tool. Coursework focuses on throwing skills and three-dimensional design concepts related to the functional ceramic vessel, wheel thrown sculpture, and creative problem-solving. In addition to learning to plan and fabricate more complex forms, students will participate in loading and firing various kilns and learn about glazes through material research.

Course Objectives 1. Create personal goals with instructor in order to explore historical and contemporary examples of claywork for problem-seeking/problem-solving.
2. Plan, visualize, and fabricate hand-built, wheel-thrown or sculptural claywork as negotiated personal goals.
3. Use tools and materials to create work in series and develop ideas and skills to express personal artistic goals.
4. Use demonstrated and researched techniques to finish and process surfaces.
5. Create ceramics objects that exhibit effective studio practice, (materials management, firing, health & safety issues.)
6. Create ceramic objects that demonstrate historical and contemporary studio ceramics, claybodies, firing /glazing techniques.
